Technology

Technology is an important aspect of Antarctic research, providing a means of studying, moving about in and surviving in Antarctica’s extreme environment. As technology changes and improves we are able to find better ways to examine the environment, travel to more remote places and have less impact on the places we visit.
Our research involves the use of lots of state-of-the-art equipment to get us to the research sites, collect and then examine the data and display the results. Click on the following links to find out what technology is required to conduct research in the Antarctic Dry Valleys.

Transport
Being one of the most extreme and remote environments on Earth, research on the frozen Antarctic continent has immense transport requirements. Travel to, from and within Antarctica requires specialised transportation built for or adapted to the inhospitable environment. The nzTABS mission has a number of transport requirements to achieve success in the field. Click to find out more about how to travel in Antarctica.
Survival
In such a remote and hazardous location as Antarctica, special equipment is needed to enable scientist to live and carry out their research. From the tents they live in and the specialised clothing they wear to what they use for cooking and recreation, technology is required to enable the nzTABS team to operate for extended periods at the bottom of the world.
Science

High-tech science equipment is used to look at, measure and describe terrestrial Antarctic biology. From field collection to laboratory analysis, technological equipment is used by the nzTABS researchers to make new discoveries about the biology they are studying. Click to find out more about the state-of-the-art science equipment used in this project.

Safety & Communication
Safety and communications equipment are vital in Antarctic research. Having the right gear available can make all the difference in a bad situation. From emergency survival gear and global positioning systems to radio and satellite phone communications, click here to find out what the nzTABS team are equipped with for their missions into the field.
