Springtails found in the Ross Dependency of Antarctica
Springtails derive their common name from the long fork-like ‘spring’ or furcula found on the underside of their abdomens (see blue arrow on photo below). In temperate areas, this can allow them to move from one area to another or to avoid predators such as birds or other insects.

Journey of a Lifetime for Teacher Fellow
2008 New Zealand Science, Mathematics and Technology Teacher Fellowship recipient Len Doel spent most of his 2008-09 summer season in the McMurdo Sound area participating in two projects, studying the technology that scientists use to collect data in extreme environments. The first team Len assisted was at Cape Bird Hut, Ross Island studying Adelie penguins with Landcare Research scientists. The second project was the nzTABS project, based in the Miers Valley. In this project Len participated in sampling and analysis of biocomplexity in the Dry Valleys.
